The user's experience

In developing this new release, Epicor has taken the opportunity to implement a new approach to the underlying design and include Web 2.0 navigation and interaction features we use every day on the internet in the ERP system. This means you can do Google-like searches for data, push ERP information via feeds into user portals, create “mash-ups” – your own screens consisting of components of your choice: transactions; analytics; alerts - active collaboration with other users, access ERP data from MS Office applications and even work off-line or via mobile devices. The user experience is very familiar to anyone using Microsoft Office: the Epicor Portal is based on Microsoft SharePoint and the Epicor screens even have Office-like Ribbons.

Technology Leap

The design of Epicor 9 is based on Second Generation SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and embraces all the latest Microsoft technologies. It is fully .NET 3.X and Web Services, with BizTalk 2006 R2 Support. This might sound technical but it means something very significant for the business: the design makes it much easier, safer and cheaper to adapt Epicor 9 to different company, organisation and international requirements. SOA means that the system is designed around componentised processes, such as “calculate tax”, which is re-used wherever tax has to be calculated. This makes it easy to update, and very easy to add more processes. The technology used makes it quick and easy to integrate Epicor 9 with other systems and other businesses.

The design, technology and combination of powerful features make this an incredibly exciting release. Epicor users will no longer be held back by design constraints within early versions: Epicor 9 is designed for the technologies of the future as well as the present.
